This website is dedicated to reporting information
about the Icelandic immigrants to North America and their descendants. In the period between 1870 and 1914 almost
20% of the population of Iceland (about 15,000 people) immigrated to North
America. Numerous books have been
written, which record the history of this emigration and the settlements they
established. Most of us in this 21st
century can only imagine the hardships they endured in this foreign
country. Many of the settlements were a
disaster for the immigrants, as they tried to eke out a living from the rock
and bush-land of this continent. Many
died as a result of the extreme living conditions and diseases.
This current project is an outcome of work done on
behalf of the ethnic newspaper, Lögberg-Heimskringla, to identify, locate and map the
original Icelandic settlements and the current Icelandic associations and clubs
in North America. These maps may be
viewed by choosing the appropriate links in this website. This mapping and the gathering of information
will continue in the immediate future.
The website is maintained and edited by Dr Allan M
Johnson, a member of the Board of Directors of Lögberg-Heimskringla. If you wish to comment on the contents of
this website, provide information and/or photographs about the Icelandic
settlers, the settlements and their descendants, send an email message to allanmjohnson@gmail.com.
