Family
Charlie married Helen Rempel (nee Koop) on August 20 1971. Helen was a widow with three daughters, who are all married. Charlie and Helen have 8 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren, who are scattered in BC, AB, MB, and ON, but none in SK.
Work History
Charlie spent 3 years in the RCAF. After that, he worked for Air Canada for a few months in aircraft maintenance. He returned to Stonewall to take Grade X1. After that, Charlie worked Bristol Aerospace, but didn't like indoor work, so he left to work on a hog farm for about 7 years. He took a leave of absence to go on a working holiday to Australia, where he worked at various jackaroo jobs on sheep farms (2) and worked on pegging crews, etc. in the Kalgoorie. He returned to the hog farm for a few months. In 1971, he married the widow, Helen, who had a small 40 acre farm with a few old buildings on it. They turned it into a 280 acre farm with 3 new barns and a house and established a 50 to 60 cow dairy farm. After years of working hard, they realized that none of the children wanted the farm and, since reliable help was hard to get they decided to sell in 1990.
Interests
After selling the farm, Charlie and Helen travelled for about 3 years to places, such as England, Belgium, Holland, Austria, East and West Germany, Finland and Czeh Republic. In most of these countries they travelled by car. They toured with a tour group for 6 weeks in the USSR, as far as Siberia, Uzbekstan, Poland and Finland. Later, they spent 6 weeks in Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Hawaii. Then, they took a 5 month trip by RV from Manitoba to Vancouver, south to Palm Springs, east to Key West, north to Pennsylvania and New York state, into Canada and then back into the USA traveling through the northern states to Minnesota and back into Manitoba.
Since taking all those trips, they have made shorter trips to specific places, such as to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Denver Colorado, Wyoming and Montana and lately the Maritimes. We even went several times to Norway Bay, Quebec where a daughter has a lovely summer home.
Now Charlie spends his time volunteering. He was featured on a TV program called ''Unexplained Canada'', which was shown on the SPACE channel recently, He also played a major role at a local Dinner Theatre performance and generally makes himself useful in the Village. If someone needs his walk shoveled, Charlie is the guy they turn too.
